entry level- Canon A590IS approx $130
mid level- Nikon D40, Canon Rebel XSi $450-$600
high end consumer- Nikon D80/D90, Canon 40D/50D, Sony A700 $1500-1700
other quality brands in all ranges include Fujifilm, Panasonic, and Olympus

I would suggest a Canon or a Nikon. Both manufacturers are very respected names in the camera business. I would go with one of these companies. Visit cnet.com if you want. They give very helpful video reviews on a lot of electronics. That might help you as well. Hope this helped.

Nikon (when using Nikon lenses and used by someone competent) will give you higher image quality than any other camera manufacturer on the market. Depending upon what you are doing I would buy either a D40 (if you do general stuff) a D90 (if you shoot sports) or a D700 (if you shoot portrait stuff.) If you shoot sports, portrait and everything, get a D3 if you can afford it. The D3 is the best camera in the world right now.

Me personally I stick with Canon, Nikon, and Sony, and I hear Olympus is good also. Wouldn’t mess with any other brand.

really depends of whether you are after a DSLR or a point and shoot.
a Dslr camera has a much larger sensor and has detachable lenses. They will always have superior image quality to a point and shoot.
Entry level DSLRs include:

Canon Rebel XT and XSi range (technically very good – huge range of lenses)
Nikon D60 (good value and build quality – huge range of lenses)
Olympus E520 (full featured and lightweight and portable – comes with great value twin lens kit – I chose this one)
Pentax k200d (great value and build quality)

All are excellent cameras. Canon and Nikon are market leaders and are what most pro’s use. However at the entry level Pentax and Olympus offer "a lot" of camera for the money to compete with the big boys. One thing to note is that Pentax and Olympus now have "in body" image stabilization (anti shake) whereas Nikon and Canon have opted for "in lens" image stabilization (this makes the lenses more expensive).

In the end its the photographer that makes the difference not the camera..these days. One thing to know is that more than 10 megapixels is totally not necessary and is more about marketing than quality.
