ANY! Let me clarify. Any camera, film or digital in approximately the same price range, has basically the same controls. They may be located in different areas of the camera. I would try to stay away from the point and shoot types as you usually have to spend a LOT of time going through the menu system to change settings. With an SLR or dSLR, most controls are at your fingertips. Digital SLRs can be had for less than $500 (USD). MY advice, for a beginning photographer buying a first time camera is a mid-level dSLR (Just make sure they can be used as a completely manual camera. Go to your local photography store and try a hands on. See What feels good in your hands, are the controls easy to reach, are they lightweight, how easy to change settings, research into reliability, then make a choice.
With digital cameras you see the photos automatically and can be deleted, so you do not have to spend time for development of film, cost of film,etc. You can shoot photos until memory medium is full, then either store them somewhere else or purchase another medium.
REMEMBER: It is not the camera that makes a good photographer. A good photographer knows lighting and exposure techniques, composition,etc. Given a cheap camera, pro photographers can make high quality shots because they know the preceding.
Select your camera and take photos, and more photos. Ask friends, relatives, acquaintances, for HONEST opinions. Carefully examine each shot and decide for yourself what element(s) did or did not work: such as how was the composition, the lighting, does this photo achieve the feel I am trying to achieve?, etc. Then take more photos and do it all over again. PRACTICE, PRACTICE and continually be open to new ideas.

Nikon D5000…it very easy to use and u can take some really professional photographs!

The Canon 1000D and Nikon D5000 are the best "Starter" cameras to go for.

If you want something with a little more oomph I’d suggest the Canon 450 or 500D or the Nikon D90.

I wouldn’t get anything less than D90 if he is that serious about photography. But if you buy a Nikon D300 fo him he’ll be jumping up and down for about 15 minutes!!!

As your husband sounds serious about photography and is planning to take a class, I definitely would avoid a point-and-shoot… My first camera was a Nikon Coolpix L11 (around $100). It was a great camera to experiment with, but it didn’t have very many capabilities.

I currently have the Canon Rebel XT, which costs around $350. I like that it has a detachable lens, so i can upgrade to more specialized lenses in the future. Most importantly, it has a manual mode, which gives you complete control over important settings.
I’m in high school, and I’m interested in photography as a career; I think it’s a great camera for a serious beginner!

The Canon Powershot SX130 IS is around $200 and also has manual setting modes… I’ve never used it though.
