Nikon FM10. If she really really wants to study photography, she needs to learn manually and film is better to learn on than digital. She can get this camera and lens for $250, then you can spend the difference on many many rolls of film.

Ignore Lomography, it’s a glorified disposable camera that has some artistic uses, but won’t teach you photography.

You should begin with a basic SLR camera. Right now there are a few out there with very good resolution for your budget. Cannon and Olympus are really good brands to keep in mind. The better she gets she will upgrade later on. Right now 10 mpxls are good enough.

NIKON brand is the best and preferred camera.

The Olympus E-510 is a better buy than anything else on the market. Photos are as good as, or better than, an equivalent Nikon.

For that budget I would suggest one of the Canon Digital Rebels (XT or Xsi) that you can afford.
It will provide your sister with a decent amateur set and being a a DSLR she will be able to use the lenses with another Canon EOS camera later on

Entry level DSLRs from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, or Olympus. I would recommend either Canon or Nikon because of the range and quality of accessories. Canon, followed by Nikon, are preferred by the majority of the pros. However, they’re pretty much equal with the new Nikon models. Go into a camera store and hold them to see which feels more comfortable.

An entry-mid level D-SLR would suit her well for that price range. Canon and Nikon are both well known and reliable brands, the latest models to go for would be:

Canon EOS 450D
Nikon D60

(the Nikon D80 is very good too but maybe a little more money than you want to spend)

If you want specific advice it’s impossible to do so without bias as this is a very personal decision, depending on all sorts of factors from weight and size of the kit involved to the quality and the ability to build a system by changing lenses for example.

My opinion for what it’s worth is that far too many people get hung up on brand names and on equipment for reasons of show – they’d be far better off learning to use it effectively, which will REALLY improve your photography.
