Usually, learning photography includes using some kind of 35 mm SLR and at least one class in photography. Once you understand the basics, it is all directly transferable to a DSLR

At this time the Nikon D3000 is a good entry level Nikon DSLR

I see you are just starting out, and I am also assuming you may also be on a budget, so I would recommend a good entry level, but one that is not current, so you may buy it used, or even new for a cheaper price (I recommend new or refurbished though, as I also assume you might not know what to watch out for when buying used, to avoid a scam). Any brand of entry level comes to mind (Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus, and Sony, Don’t bother with the others like Panasonic, they are really $$). I’ll recommend a great entry level camera from each brand and state why it may be a good choice, so you can weigh up what you need.

Nikon: I recommend the D40 or D40x as they are the past models, but are still one of the legendary entry level dslrs. They are very easy to learn with and have infallible metering (Pictures will not be too light or dark). Only problem is, you will have to buy lenses with a built in motor which may cost a few more $$.

Canon: I recommend any camera from the X-series (Xs, XTi, XSi, etc…) because they are relatively light, compact, and easy to use, and contain very high internal specs. Build quality is an issue for some, but at this stage, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Pentax: This is the brand where I feel you can get you best value for the money. Try out they *ist series, K100, K110 or K-2000 (K-m). They are very compact, but feature some great specs for the money, they also can use older manual lenses. The build quality is generally very excellent, with the cameras being solid and lasting for a long time.

Olympus: This brand has a great range of nice compact cameras that are also good value, they have great anti dust systems as well. Check out anything in the E-5XX series like the E-510 or E-520. Look at the E-4XX (E-400 to E-420) if you want something even smaller.

Sony: This is a brand which focuses alot on gadgets, but still has good quality as it uses old Minolta technology. They have the best live view on the market (I never use live view, but you may want to). They have very low prices as well. The ergonomics (how it feels to hold) on the low end models however may not be to your liking however. Look at the lower numbered models in their alpha series.
