The hassleblads are very good, with a simple lens you’re looking at upwards of $25k. There’s some very good DSLR cameras now, canon’s latest 1D, Nikon’s D3x. Put a 24-70 f2.8 zoom on one and you’re not getting much change out of $10k.

Or, you could stop thinking you need "the best" and get her a decent beginners camera like the Nikon d3100 (a D7000 if you think she will take photography seriously) or a Canon Rebel t2i. Go for the kit lens, add a bag, lens pen, rocket blower, memory card, a copy of photography for dummies and, if you’re really generous a gift voucher so that she has a start on the next lens or flash.

Best one for a photo-enthusiast to start with is Nikon’s D3100. It cost under USD $700 with an 18-55m lens. I suggest to take body only & buy 18-105mm lens separately

If she is more serious about photography then buy Nikon’s D7000. This one should be priced under $1200 for a body only. Of course, take the 18-105mm lens separately

I don’t agree with answers above. You should go for a used daguerreotype camera dating back to 1839. The Camera will be on sale at the WestLicht Auction in Vienna. Oh don’t forget to bring some $750.000 (just in case you know!?).
