What is the best camera to use for taking photos of baseball players and other sporting events?

I just want a nice camera I can use in a stadium, and zoom in to the players as best as possible. What would you recommend I use, and if it can be under 00 that would be even better. Maybe Nikon d40x or Nikon d80, or are those not good enough? Any suggestions on lenses would be great for this.

A 12x zoom and 60 (!!) frames per second for only $999 should be a good choice, if you get several HUGE memory cards. It sure looks like a fun camera.

I was going to say that either the Nikon D3 or Canon 1Ds Mark III with a nice 400 mm f/2.8 and a 600 mm f/4 (around a $25,000 or more)

The Nikon D40 or D80 is fine for getting great images, but you may find you have two problems … one; many stadiums do not allow "professional looking" cameras into the stadium and two; unless you can get close to the field, you may have to crop, so shoot at your cameras highest resolution. The best lens in your price range may be the 70-300 mm VR.

Even the pros with the $10,000 lenses are right on the field
